Tooth whitening is the most conservative and cost effective way of improving the appearance of your teeth. It is a bleaching process which can be done in chair at LDS or at home. Tooth whitening utilizes the oxidising effect of peroxide to lighten the tooth enamel to its most naturally white shade – this end shade is person specific due to variations in enamel thickness and natural dentine/enamel shades. There are two types of peroxide gel: hydrogen peroxide and carbomide peroxide. There is also a range of different peroxide concentrations available to use in tooth whitening. The strongest concentration of hydrogen peroxide can only be applied by a dentist or hygienist and requires a protection gel barrier to be applied to the gums to protect them from the peroxide. This in chair whitening will also require approximately a week of take home whitening to complete the whitening process.
The second whitening option is to use the take home kit only. It takes approximately 14 applications of 1 hour per day to reach the lightest natural shade of the tooth. For darker teeth it may take longer. This take home method using the “Pola” take home whitening kit produces the least sensitivity during the whitening period. The take home whitening method is our most popular and cost effective way of whitening your teeth.
Whitening is safe and will not damage the teeth. The effect will last years and can be redone using the same take-home kit when the whiteness begins to reduce.
